(7 February) Online surveys are on their way

Two online surveys are being prepared for you to supply detailed information about your sea angling. One will gather information on your sea angling activities and catches around the coast, as well as your views on the state of our fish stocks. The second will focus on how much you spend on sea angling and the other benefits you gain from the sport.

The online surveys will not start until February or March because they are asking anglers to recall details of their angling trips, catches and expenditure in previous months. So if you want to complete the survey, start keeping a record of your catches and expenditure now. Anyone completing the questionnaires can also be entered in the prize draw for fishing tackle.
(7 February) Survey of shore and private boat angling is now underway

The on-site survey of anglers fishing from the shore or their own boats, started in January in most areas and will run through the whole of 2012. Surveyors will be interviewing anglers at randomly selected fishing sites, on different days and times of day, to ask about catches, sizes of fish caught, and how much the anglers have spent on their fishing trip.

Only a fraction of anglers will encounter a surveyor, but if you do, please help us by providing the information required. You will be helping us to understand the state of our fish stocks and to demonstrate the economic and social importance of sea angling in England.

Everyone completing a questionnaire and providing contact details will be entered in a prize draw for the month, and could win rod and reel combos or tackle vouchers.

(28 July) Surveying sea anglers: project begins soon

Recreational sea angling is one of the country's most popular sports. Up to 2 million people go sea angling in England and Wales every year, and they have a substantial impact on local economies.

There is a lack of information on sea angling activity, catches and current economic value in England, however, and this means that inshore fisheries management does not fully reflect the role and impact of recreational sea anglers and their activities.
(15 July) Biggest ever national sea angling survey to boost sport

Sea anglers in England are to be asked what fish they catch and what they return in the biggest ever survey of the sport in England.

The survey, Sea Angling 2012, aims to find out how many people enjoy the sport, how much fish they catch, what is returned alive, and how important the sport is to the country’s economy.
