Press release

Have your say on the work of the Marine Management Organisation

Date issued: 21 October 2011
Reference: 24/11

The Marine Management Organisation exists to contribute to the Government’s vision of clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse seas. We do this principally in the areas of marine licensing, fisheries management, marine conservation and marine planning.

We are committed to providing opportunities for everyone with an interest in the marine area to have their say on our work to contribute to the sustainable development of the marine area.

We are therefore inviting informal views on our Corporate Plan 2011-15 (PDF 984 KB) that sets out the work we will deliver over the next four years. We will use your ideas and feedback to produce our next Corporate Plan, which will posted on our website for further input later in the year.

In order to inform the next Corporate Plan, we welcome your initial informal feedback. In addition, we welcome views on whether you feel there is anything in particular you believe the Marine Management Organisation should focus on.

Please send your responses to stakeholder@marinemanagement.org.uk

We look forward to hearing from you.

Further information on the MMO

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) enables sustainable development in English waters. As an executive non-departmental public body given powers under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, the MMO plans, regulates and licenses activity in the marine area.

Since it was established on 1 April 2010 the MMO has:

  • implemented a new marine planning system which integrates the social, economic and environmental needs of English seas
  • delivered a new marine licensing system that results in clearer, simpler and quicker licensing decisions
  • managed UK fisheries quotas and fishing fleet capacity and ensured stocks were not overfished
  • awarded over £4.5 million of European funding to benefit fishermen, the fishing industry and coastal communities in England
  • delivered new nature conservation duties including making its first byelaw and responding to marine emergencies alongside other agencies.

The MMO is committed to being open and transparent in the delivery of its duties in line with the principles of better regulation, making use of the best available evidence. The MMO provides people, industry and organisations with opportunities to engage in and understand our decisions.
