Applying for a UK Government approved satellite-tracking device

All UK fishing vessels over 15 metres in overall length and involved in the exploitation of sea fisheries are required to be fitted with a UK Government-approved satellite-tracking device meeting the requirements set out in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 404/2011 (PDF 3 MB).

Please refer to VMS 1: notes for guidance (PDF 86 KB) for guidance on registering for satellite monitoring.

Applications for a UK Government approved satellite-tracking device should be made at the port office where the vessel is registered. Vessel owners will need to complete VMS 2: Satellite-tracking device registration (PDF 218 KB). This form must be submitted with a valid Certificate of Registry to the port office.

Please note that the appropriate UK fisheries monitoring centre should be notified immediately if any of the following events occur by completing and submitting VMS 2: Satellite-tracking device registration (PDF 218 KB):

  • change of the vessel's port of administration
  • change of vessel ownership
  • proposed replacement of satellite-tracking device
  • transferring a position reporting account
  • closure of a position reporting account with the current satellite communications service provided
  • opening of a new position reporting account with a satellite communications service provider (such as Xantic, Stratos).

Masters, owners or representatives must ensure that the administrative information held by the UK fisheries monitoring centre for its fishing is accurate at all times.

It is the responsibility of the vessel owner to contact Applied Satellite Technology Ltd (AST) and to make the necessary arrangements regarding the contract, installation date and payment. It is the responsibility of the former owner as well as the new owner of a fishing vessel, to notify AST when a vessel has undergone a change in ownership. It is the responsibility of the vessel owner to ensure that all ownership and payment details are up to date with us and AST.
