Satellite monitoring

We operate a satellite vessel monitoring system (VMS) from its fisheries monitoring centre in our Newcastle headquarters.

The VMS is used, as part of the sea fisheries enforcement programme, to track the positions of fishing vessels over 12 metres in overall length in UK waters. It is also used to track all UK registered fishing vessels globally.

Data collected

Since 2005, two-hourly position reports from UK vessels over 15 metres in length.

Since 2000, two-hourly position reports from UK vessels over 24 metres in length.

Since 1985, surveillance data of fishing vessels in English and Welsh waters from fishery protection aircraft and fishery protection vessels.

Please note that due to the Data Protection Act, all vessel information is anonymous.
