Net measurement procedures
Since 1 September 2009 fisheries inspectors of all member states are required to use the Omega net gauge when measuring the mesh size of fishing gear.
Further information on the new net measurement process can be found in Commission Regulation (EC) No 517/2008 (PDF 705 KB).
The Omega Net Gauge
The Omega mesh gauge is an electronically driven instrument that applies a pre-set longitudinal force to the mesh to be measured. Once this force is reached, the exact opening of the gauge is measured automatically.
Mesh opening and measuring force are shown on a digital display. A series of measurements can be performed and the readings are stored in an integral memory.
At the end of the sequence the number of measurements made and the average mesh size are displayed.
Calibration will be carried out routinely by means of a test plate with a range of fixed opening lengths and a set of weights. All gauges have a factory calibration certificate.
The Omega gauge can be used for diamond, square, and 90 degree turned meshes in active fishing gears but also for the fine twine meshes of passive gears.
The pre-set force (in Newtons) set down for the different mesh size ranges are:
- Active gear
- 20N for mesh size less than 35 mm.
- 50N for mesh size greater than or equal to 35 mm and less than 55 mm.
- 125N for mesh size greater than or equal to 55 mm.
- Passive gear
- 10N for passive gear of all size ranges.
