Celtic Sea boxes 2012

Under Council Regulation (EC) 1288/2009 (PDF 728 KB) as read with Annex III of Council Regulation 43/2009 (PDF 6.76 MB), ICES rectangles (outside 6 nautical miles), 30E4, 31E4 and 32E3 were closed from 1 February to 31 March 2012 to all fishing activity to protect spawning cod.

The regulation had a number of derogations for the following gear and catch retained onboard:

  • inshore static nets fixed with stakes, scallop and mussel dredges, handlines, mechanised jigging, draft nets and beach seines, pots and creels are allowed provided that only those gears are carried on board and only mackerel, pollack, salmon, shellfish and crustacea are retained on board
  • pelagic nets of mesh size less than 55 mm are allowed provided that only pelagic species are retained on board.
