Summary of meetings held with the Thames Estuary Quota Group and the Caister Association on 24 August 2011

The Thames Estuary Quota Group meeting allowed six fishermen, representing the Eastern district, to give us their ideas about how the quota for their local fishery may be managed throughout the year.

  • North Sea sole – Poor fishery this so far this year it is hoped to improve in the coming weeks. The current catch limit will be maintained for September and limits will be considered for next month moving into the winter period.
  • North Sea cod – Poor fishery this year. Again the current catch limit will be maintained and limits will be discussed for the winter fishery.
  • North Sea skates and rays – Even after a low catch limit and extra quota that was gained through domestic and international swaps this fishery would have to close. A scientist from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science went onto explain more about stock assessment.
  • Herring IVc/VIId – We have received a gift from North Atlantic Fish Producers' Organisation of 30 tonnes of herring IVc/VIId. This has allowed us to increase the catch limits. After further discussion it has been decided that the catch limit will be increased to 1.5 tonnes from 1 September and communication will continue with local groups and the Lowestoft office as to when a further increase should be made.
  • North Sea mackerel – Recent closure was due to high uptake and domestic swaps are being investigated though this did depend upon available swap currency.

The Caister Association requested a meeting with us after the recent closure of the North Sea mackerel fishery. This meeting allowed four members of the association time to put forward their concerns regarding the closure. Herring IVc/VIId was also discussed and it was agreed that we would keep in contact with a member of the association and the Lowestoft office.
