Current licences and permits

Licence variations occur to reflect changes in quota limits and closures/openings of sea areas during the lifetime of a licence, as requested by our quota managers.

New licences

  • (9 December 2011) Licence type 1121 for Category A over 10 metre vessels that are members of the West of Scotland Fish Producers' Organisation.
  • (28 October 2011) Licence type 1325 for Category A (purser) over 10 metre vessels that are members of Interfish.

Recent licence variations

Effective from 00:01 hours, Wednesday 1 February 2012:

  • To decrease monthly catch limit cod fishery in sea areas VIIb-c, VIIe-k, VIII, IX, X and CECAF 34.1.1 (EC Zone) from 500 to 400 kg. This only affects licence type 9199.
  • To decrease monthly catch limit haddock fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV from 2 tonnes to 1 tonne. This only affects licence type 9199.
  • To decrease monthly catch limit ling fishery in sea areas VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII (excluding Greenland fishing zones) and XIV (excluding Greenland fishing zones) from 1.5 tonnes to 1 tonne. This only affects licence type 9199.

  • To increase monthly catch limit sole fishery in sea area VIIe from 50 to 100 kg. This affects licence types 1199 and 1299.

  • To decrease monthly catch limit ling fishery in sea areas VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII (excluding Greenland fishing zones) and XIV (excluding Greenland fishing zones). This affects licence types 1199, 3199 and 4199.
  • To decrease monthly catch limit ling fishery in sea areas VII, VIII, IX and X from 500 to 250 kg. This only affects licence type 1299.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Thursday 12 January 2012:

  • To increase monthly catch limit cod fishery in sea areas VIIb-c, VIIe-k, VIII, IX, X and CECAF 34.1.1 (EC Zone) from 250 to 500 kg. This only affects licence type 9199.
  • To increase monthly catch limit cod fishery in sea areas -c, VIIe-k, VIII, IX, X and CECAF 34.1.1 (EC Zone) from 250 to 300 kg. This only affects licence type 9499.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Sunday 1 January 2012:

  • To set the beginning of year openings, closures and catch limits for all under 10 metre and over 10 metre non-sector vessels. This affects licence types 1299, 3199, 4199, 9199 and 9499.
  • To set the beginning of year openings, closures and catch limits for all Category A and Category A pelagic licences. This affects licence types 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 117, 118, 119, 1110, 1112, 1114, 1116, 1117, 1118, 1119, 1120, 1121, 1123, 1125, 1199, 131, 137, 163, 1325, 1425, 1426 and 1625.
  • To set the beginning of year openings, closures and catch limits for all Category B, Category C and under 10 metre vessels for all Isle of Man registered vessels and vessels in membership of a UK producer organisation. This affects licence types 312, 319, 3114, 3123, 411, 4110, 4116, 4120, 4123, 911, 912, 913, 915, 917, 9110, 9114, 9118 and 9123.
  • To remove the 0 tonne quota allocation for the Thames and Blackwater herring fishery from the licence schedule. This only affects licence type 2399.
  • To include the new address of the MMO Harwich office in the licence condition for the Thames and Blackwater herring fishery. This only affects licence type 2399.
  • To set limits on live weight of the total catch that may be retained on board during each fishing trip of cod as outlined in Paragraph 10.5 at 1.5 per cent for each of the ICES divisions VIa, EU and international waters of Vb east of 12'00'W and VIb, EU and international waters of Vb west of 12'00'W, XII and XIV. This affects licence schedule types 11, 13, 14 and 16.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Sunday 25 December 2011 valid until 23.59 hours, 31 December 2011:

  • To close whiting fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.
  • To close saithe fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone), IIIa, IIIb-d (EC Zone) and IV to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.
  • To close hake fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV (EC Zone) to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.
  • To close ling fishery in Norwegian waters of ICES IV to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Friday 23 December 2011 valid until 23.59 hours, 31 December 2011:

Effective from 00.01 hours, Tuesday 20 December 201:

  • To close mackerel fishery in sea areas IIa (Non EC Zone), Vb (EC Zone), VI, VII, VIIIabde, XII (excluding Greenland fishing zones) and XIV (excluding Greenland fishing zones) to all vessels in membership of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation. This only affects licence type 119.
  • To close skates and rays fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV (EC Zone) to all vessels in membership of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation. This affects licence types 119 and 319.
  • To close ling fishery in sea area IV (EC Zone) to all vessels in membership of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation. This affects licence types 119 and 319.
  • To close cod fishery in sea areas VIIb, VIIc, VIIe-k, VIII, IX, X and CECAF 34.1.1 (EC Zone). This affects licence types 9199 and 9499.
  • To amend licence schedule sub-paragraph 16 to read "The combined total landings of all pelagic species (other than pilchard (Sardinia pilchardus)), as defined in the conditions to this licence, may not exceed 500 tonnes live weight in each of the periods 1 April 2011 to 31  March 2012 and 1 April 2012 to 31  March 2013 comprising the duration of this licence." This affects only licence schedule type 11.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Saturday 17 December 2011:

  • To open nephrops fishery in sea area VII (Porcupine Bank – Unit 16 only) to all vessels in membership of the Wales and West Coast Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 1119.

  • To increase limits on live weight of the total catch that may be retained on board during each fishing trip of cod and whiting as outlined in Paragraph 10.5 from 2 to 4 per cent. This affects licence schedule types 11, 13, 14, 16 and 31.

  • To increase quarterly catch limit for nephrops fishery in sea areas Vb (EC Zone) and VI from 12 to 20 tonnes. This only affects licence type 9199.
  • To open hake fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV (EC Zone) to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.
  • To open haddock fishery in sea areas Vb (EC Zone) and VIa to all vessels in membership of the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation. This only affects licence type 118.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Sunday 13 November 2011:

  • To close herring fishery in sea areas IVa and IVb. This will affect licence types 119 (Scottish Fishermen's Organisation) and 1112 (North East of Scotland Fishermen's Organisation).

Effective from 00.01 hours, Friday 11 November 2011:

  • To close nephrops fishery in sea areas VII (only Porcupine Bank Unit 16) to all vessels in membership of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation. This only affects licence type 119.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Wednesday 9 November 2011:

  • To open cod fishery in sea areas IIa (EC Zone) and IV to all Category A vessels of the Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation. This affects licence types 112 and 912.
  • To open mackerel fishery in sea areas IIa (non-EC Zone), Vb (EC Zone), VI, VII, VIIIabde, XII (excluding Greenland fishing zones) and XIV (excluding Greenland fishing zones) to all vessels in membership of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation. This only affects licence type 119.
  • To add Newlyn to the port of landings for herring fishery as listed at paragraph 10.1 on the licence condition. This affects licence conditions: 13, 14 and 16 (licence types 131, 137, 1325, 1425, 1426, 1625 and 163).

Effective from 00.01 hours, Friday 4 November 2011:

  • To close scallop, meaning King Scallops (Pecten maximus) and Queen Scallops (Aequipecten opercularis), effort in sea areas VII and biologically sensitive area. This will affect licence schedules 11, 12 , 13, 14, 16, 31 and 41. This variation only effects vessels over 15 metres.

Effective from 00.01 hours, Tuesday 1 November 2011:

  • To decrease monthly catch limit for plaice fishery in sea areas VIId-e from 1 tonne to 250 kg. This only affects licence type 9199.
  • To decrease monthly catch limit for plaice fishery in sea areas VIId-e from 300 to 250 kg. This only affects licence type 9499.
  • To decrease monthly catch limit for sole fishery in sea area VIIe from 75 to 25 kg. This affects licence types 9199 and 9499.
