Fisheries Challenge Fund
The Fisheries Challenge Fund (FCF) was established by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in 2005 and provides funding for short-term projects that look at fisheries management issues.
We took over running of the scheme when we were created in 2010 and we are provided funding by Defra to award to projects that help fishermen and other interested parties to get involved in fisheries research.
The funding is provided to projects that are consistent with our, Defra and the Common Fisheries Policy objective of developing sustainable fisheries. These projects also address a fisheries management issue that is relevant to part of the UK fishing industry.
A wide range of research and analysis projects have been funded through the FCF. These include, but are not limited to biological, social and economic studies.
Priority research projects include:
- those sponsored by a university or relevant government agency
- work involving an element of stakeholder contribution, for example making vessel time available for project work
- those supporting regional advisory councils' (RACs) work, because the UK Government has identified the provision of effective practical support to RACs as a high priority.
Allocation of funding for projects has been assessed on a case-by-case basis, using value for money criteria.
Details of previous research projects can be found on the completed projects page.
